The 3rd Trevor Davenport Photographic Competition 2026

22/03/2026 Anne Sordinas

The 3rd Trevor Davenport Photographic Competition is now open and ready to accept your butterfly, moth and life cycle photographs!

This competition is part of Ionian Butterfly Conservation's popular Festival of Butterflies which is held every May. The aim of this event is to encourage a greater awareness of the amazing biodiversity of the Ionian Islands region's lepidoptera.

Corfu Butterfly Conservation officially became Ionian Butterfly Conservation on January 1st and in light of our expanding reach, we are making a special request for images from the entire Ionian region for this year's competition. We hope to encourage those who are new to butterflying or do not have regular cameras with an all-new category exclusively for mobile phone photography! If you feel unsure of your ability to take butterfly photographs, please go to our website for support by clicking the very helpful Photography Guide under "Community" and/or by watching the YouTube video "Photographing Insects" written by the contest's namesake Trevor himself. At Ionian Butterfly Conservation, we feel that butterflying is for everyone and no special knowledge is needed to get out in the field and start taking photos of the beautiful butterflies and moths that are flying now!

The categories for this year's competition are:

  • Digital Camera - Adult Butterflies/Moths
  • Mobile Phone - Adult Butterflies/Moths
  • Life Cycles (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis)

You can enter up to three photographs in either the Digital Camera category or the Mobile Phone category. Additionally, you can enter up to three photographs in the Life Cycles category. There will be first, second and third place winners in both adult butterfly categories and one grand winner in the life cycles category. Entries must have been taken within the last three years in the Ionian Island region. All images will be available for viewing on our website as they are submitted for the competition. The ownership of the photos remains with the photographer, but IBC may use them for publicity purposes. When photographing butterflies, please adhere to our Code of Conduct which is found in the About section of the website. The competition ends on May 11th and the winners will be announced online on May 15th after our Festival of Butterflies. Our judges this year will be IBC committee members: Zoi Fondoulakou , Giannis Gasteratos, and Spiros Apergis.

If you have any beautiful butterfly, moth or life cycle photos from the last three years from anywhere in the Ionian region, please submit them to our competition today. If you are lucky enough to be in the Ionian right now, why not take advantage of the gorgeous spring weather and get out in the field to observe the amazing butterfly fauna that surrounds you? Happy hunting and good luck!

To enter or find out more about the competition please visit our competition entry page.
